Listen: Lady Gaga Debuts Suicide-Themed Song, “Princess Die,” During Concert
Story by Peter Gicas
Is Lady Gaga’s new song to die for? While performing in Melbourne on Tuesday night, Mother Monster debuted what is undoubtedly one of her darkest tunes yet. “I wrote it a little while ago, and I’ve never ever played it for anyone,” she told the crowd. “This song is a little sad. But it’s about some of the most deep and personal thoughts I’ve ever had. It’s called ‘Princess Die,’ D-I-E.” Sure enough, the piano ballad includes some rather unsettling lyrics. “Leave the coffin open when I go/And leave my pearls and lipstick on so everybody knows/Pretty will be the photograph I leave/Laying down on famous knives so everybody sees,” Gaga sang, adding such verses as “I wish that I was strong/I wish that I was wrong/I wish that I could cope, but I took pills and left a note.” She later crooned, “I’ll do it in the swimming pool so everybody sees.” Gaga said she isn’t sure yet if the song will appear on her next album, noting that “Princess Die” is “in no way reflective of the rest of the music” that will be on the upcoming CD.
